With Sri Lanka’s surrounding waters of the Indian Ocean, specially Mirissa being so rich with marine-life, it is no surprise that the Blue Whales use the area as an annual feeding ground. The Blue Whale is maybe the most impressive of Sri Lanka’s yearly visitors due to it’s extraordinary size, grace and mystery. The blue whale is the world’s largest creature ever to exist. New research shows that these massive creatures, growing almost to 100 feet long and weighing 200 tons, can complete a full 360 degree roll. Sri Lanka proudly boasts being in the position as the world’s best location to spot not only Blue Whales, but also Sperm Whales as they journey a huge distance to warmer feeding grounds in the Bay of Bengal, from the Horn of Africa.
Mirissa – Surfing
Mirissa Beach is rapidly becoming a popular Surfer hangout during the months of November to March when it’s the rainy season on the East coast. For some reason Mirissa Beach is well known to the Japanese Surfers. The wave could generate as far as where the Mirissa main point wave generates but comes a long way to break at the shore. It’s a safe bet if the wave height is more than 7 ft in the main break the Mirissa Beach break can be found right before the rock cliff of the main point. There are many body boarders who find this point attractive. The wave could close out at times, leaving you stuck in the sand for a second or two if the wave is powerful.
